Visiting Researchers

The Reserve’s component sites are “living laboratories,” ideal sites for research and long-term monitoring. These efforts contribute to the growing understanding of how estuaries function and change over time, and inform predictions of how coastal ecosystems respond to different stressors. We welcome the opportunity to support guest researchers who are interested in studying these systems. Recent research partnerships include Cary Institute of Ecosystem Studies, Cornell University, the State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry (ESF), and the University of Maryland.

Site Profile

The Site Profile includes an introduction to the Reserve, an environmental overview of the Hudson River Estuary, a description of ecological community types that occur among the four component sites, an overview of the Reserve’s programs and partnerships, a summary of basic and applied research conducted within the past 20 years at the Reserve, and suggestions for future research and monitoring activities.

NERRS Science Collaborative (NSC)

The NSC supports science for estuarine and coastal decision-makers. The NSC provides annual funding for projects at Research Reserves around the country. Interested researchers are encouraged to contact Chris Mitchell, Research Coordinator, to discuss proposals that are relevant to our management needs.

Visiting Scientists

The Hudson River Reserve provides several potential benefits to guest researchers. The Reserve itself includes a multitude of ecological communities, spanning from brackish tidal wetlands to freshwater tidal mudflats.

Headquartered at Norrie Point Environmental Center in Staatsburg, NY, we are equipped to provide support including field logistics, site access, watercraft, and expertise.

Use the link below to submit a Research Application to provide details about your proposed project and needs.

Lodging

Short-term lodging is available for up to two visiting researchers at the Endekill Cottage, a recently renovated historic cottage on the Margaret Lewis Norrie State Park property, located about 2 miles from the Environmental Center. The cottage is occupied by seasonal residents and most amenities are shared.

Availability is based on a first-come, first-served basis, and visitors must be “sponsored” by Research Reserve staff. For lodging inquiries, questions, or to reserve the visiting researchers’ room, you must contact Chris Mitchell, Research Coordinator (christopher.mitchell@nulldec.ny.gov) for additional information or for the room reservation form.
