Hudson River Research Reserve Tide Stations

Water Level Monitoring

Glasco, NY: Turkey Point State Forest

The Hudson River Reserve’s first tide station, established in June 2017. This station provides data on water level, water temperature, conductivity, and meteorological conditions.

Coxsackie, NY: Coxsackie Riverside Park

The Hudson River Reserve’s newest tide station, established in May 2025. This station provides data on water level, water temperature, conductivity, and meteorological conditions.

History of Water Level Monitoring in the Hudson River

The Research Reserve manages several long-term environmental monitoring programs in the Hudson River Estuary. In order to understand how conditions are changing in our estuary, we must also understand how water levels fluctuate and change. For over 100 years, the only permanent tide station on the Hudson River was NOAA’s The Battery station, located at the tip of Manhattan (River Mile 0). That station is part of NOAA’s National Water Level Observation Network (NWLON), which provides high-accuracy water level data on our nation’s lakes, estuaries, and oceans. Although a long-standing and reliable station, it is not feasible for that station to provide accurate data on conditions for the upper Hudson River, which is tidal until the Federal Dam in Troy (River Mile 150).

In 2017, the Research team at HRNERR collaborated with NOAA to establish the Turkey Point station, a NWLON-compliant tide station located on the shore of the Hudson River near Saugerties (River Mile 100). This station provides accurate, real-time data including water level, water temperature, and weather conditions for the Hudson River Estuary.

Hudson River Estuary PORTS®

NOAA’s Physical Oceanographic Real-Time System (PORTS®) provides real-time oceanographic data and other navigation products to promote safe and efficient navigation within U.S. waters. In 2024, HRNERR and NOAA partnered to establish the Hudson River Estuary PORTS network, with the Turkey Point station as its focal water level monitoring station. This is the second system of its kind in New York State and will provide real-time water level data from Sleepy Hollow to Troy.

In 2025, the Reserve established a second tide station at Coxsackie Riverside Park. This station provides additional water level data which inform more accurate tidal predictions in the upper Hudson.

HRNERR is also working with partners to develop additional sensors to fill critical gaps in the state’s maritime data.
